Default Losing Wireless Connection...

I'm hoping somebody might be able to suggest a possible solution or something that I've not tried already, to resolve my connection issue.

I'm running Windows XP, fully updated. My router is a Belkin Wireless G+ MIMO Modem Router. It is positioned in the adjoining room, about 18ft away. My walls are plasterboard and the doors are open (it might help!), yet my desktop pc keeps losing wireless connection and has to reconnect.

I'm thinking that it might be a problem of interference from other wireless stuff. The only 2 other wireless things I have are my mouse (MS Laser 6000) and my telephone. As I understand it, the phone operates on the same wireless frequency as the modem router (2.4) but I think the mouse is different so shouldn't be an issue.

I've tried disabling XP's wireless manager and using the Belkin software, but I get the same symptons with both.

I've moved the wireless receiver away from the mouse receiver. I've moved the modem as close as I can (which defeats the object of wireless). My software tells me I have an "Excellent" reception, so I just can't fathom out what the problem is. I've even tried changing the channel that the modem uses. It was on "auto" and I have tried settings 1, 6 and 11 - reportedly the best channels. So far, nothing has fixed it.

If anybody has any ideas, I would be most grateful for the help. It could well be something very silly that i've missed, so don't worry about sounding patronising by pointing out any mistake I may have made!

Ok, I've done some testing and can confirm that it is not the cordless phone which is causing me to lose connection. I unplugged it and I am still being disconnected.

The modem router is staying connected to my ISP, so it is my PC which is losing wireless connection to the router, despite the Belkin software, and the XP software, telling me that I have an excellent signal.

A bit of googling has suggested that the Belkin software (Belkin Wireless Network Utility) is unreliable and can cause a loss of connection, however another page suggests that the XP software is unreliable!

I really am at a loss here, so if any of the good folk looking at this post have any ideas at all, I would be very happy to hear them.

Well, 50 views and no reply... Fortunately I appear to have solved the problem, so incase anybody else with the same problem as me views this, I shall explain how I solved it.

The problem turned out to be the Belkin Wireless Network software. For some reason it was proving unreliable at maintaining a connection between the Belkin wireless receiver and the Belkin modem/router.

I unplugged the wireless receiver, uninstalled the Belkin software then plugged the wireless receiver back in. This prompted the new hardware wizard, which I directed towards the Belkin CD, to install the correct driver. No other software, just the driver.

My connection is now managed by the Windows XP software. I had previously tried reverting to XP from Belkin, but it kept resetting itself to Belkin.

Since doing this, I have not lost connection to my router once.

I hope this helps somebody experiencing a similar problem to mine, as help on this forum seems a bit hard to come by.

Thumbs up Re: Losing Wireless Connection...

WOW! Thanks man! I have the exact same problem. Unfortunately, as I am on a mac I'm not sure whether your solution will work for me, but it helps to know whereabouts the problem lies (vague memories of some installation disc, have to have a poke around in my computer I guess. Also 'drivers' are pretty alien to mac users: I remember endless driver-related issues when i used a PC).
Anyway, I think you may have just saved me hours of pointless and frustrating research into things like router settings with weird acronyms that may as well be Chinese for all the sense to me! Cheap router! Bah!

Exclamation Re: Losing Wireless Connection...

not always, upgrade firmware in your router then drivers from wifi adaptor "any" sometimes you will get good strength of signal around 90-100% but quality 30% and you will lose connections "wireless" sometimes switch off encryption and switch on mac I know somebody will can see files ,but in edmimax is always this problem ALWAYS. and I think that you use some software like tcpoptimize and you agree optimal settings then will get 1500 mtu but if you got in the router 1400 or ppoe 1492 you will still losing connections. in integranted wifi you need to set auto speed 108Mbs -1Mbs <-- yes even to 1the connections will go down to this limit beacuse it is normal, but if you buy some good card "adapter.. etc"
with good strenght anten etc. you will keep aroud 54Mbs.

If you will find any of these problems you can reset to factory settings router and re-install drivers on yours pc .
