Default Online Gaming - Any tips on getting a better connection?

I run on 8MB internet, but we rarely reach speeds of above 2MB. Apparently in our area the maximum achievable speed is 6MB, but when we upgraded to 8MB they actually had to reduce the speed due to a loss of quality. I was wondering how I should approach looking to improve my connection when gaming, or if it just won't be possible.

Apologies if anything I've written has been unclear; my knowledge of computing in general is decent - but I know next to nothing about internet connections.

Cheers,

Max

Hi Max,

We have a couple of guides that may help you speed up your connection.

First try our tips to make sure it's not something at your end causing the problem:

Tips to speed up your broadband

If you're still finding you're experiencing lower speeds than are expected for addresses in your postcode, you should get in touch with your ISP and ask for a line test:

I hope that helps!

Thanks for the reply!

You say that my maximum local ADSL Max speed is 2.93 MB, but "My area has been upgraded by certain suppliers to enable them to provide broadband services in excess of the maximum allowed via ADSL Max". Does that mean if I switch to one of the companies you suggested I could achieve speeds in excess of 2.93 MB?

Hi again Max,

We'd need your postcode and phone number to answer that question. Could you email your question including those details to expert@broadband.co.uk so we can look up your line's rating without exposing your phone number on the web?
