Hi Guys,
A friend has recently contacted me after experiencing a complete outage on his UKOnline service. Due to the layout of their home the main BT socket is at one end of a 30' room and the pc/modem/office is at the other. For the last couple of years they have successfully used a (wait for it) triple phone cable extension to take the signal to the Voyager 105 modem and USB from that to the PC; it's worked nicely until a few days ago. After talking to their CS reps they managed to beg/borrow equipment to test the signal with the modem plugged directly into the phone socket and this has worked. It is a non-starter for them to switch the PC permanently from one end of the room to the other. The friend is now wondering if it's at all possible that BT could have reduced the gain on their line so direct connection still works, but running through an extension doesn't. I have also checked the REN total for their additional telephony equipment and that is well within acceptable limits. Has anyone else noticed a similar problem and managed to resolve it? (By-the-way, BT claim it's a UKOnline problem and, yes you've guessed it, UKOnline claim BT are at fault). The friends live in the Southville/Bedminster area (BS3 postcode) of Bristol. To anyone who may have just read the OP - this issue has now been sorted after the friend removed a powered USB hub and connected the modem directly to the PC. After I had built the new PC for him he had reconnected all devices as per his old setup.
