Default which broadband provider

I am migrating from Tiscali and would like to know a provider with good customer service and reasonable rates. I am a light to medium user.

You should look at Plusnet, they have good customer service, and they are reasonably priced, They also dont have minimum 12 month contracts, so if you dont like them they are easier to leave than those that lock you in for 12+ months.

I would like to ask why you are migrating from Tiscali? I am considering changing to them from BT Broadband as they're doing a good deal at the moment. What is their downside?

Thumbs down Re: which broadband provider

Tiscali are rubbish now - I have been with them for almost 10 years and have recently requested a MAC code and will be moving elsewhere because connection is unreliable, speed dead slow and customer support non existent - look here: http://www.tiscali.co.uk/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=215 to see I am not alone!!

Angry Utv

I upgraded my package from .5 unlimited to 8mb 20gb capped and I only get 2mb speed which I reckon is poor(The bangor exchange has adsl max and Sky can use LLU). They(UTV) have NEW and MIGRATING customer sections on their web site but dont give a damn about existing ones, I had to beg for a wireless router on upgrade which they still havent sent after a month. I have a sky box and can get 8mb 40gb capped for an extra fiver, even if I still only get 2mb at least its cheaper.................

Avoid BT TOTAL BROADBAND too ! My 7.5Mb line (as fully checked by 2 BT engineers) has for the past 14 days been so erratic and slow. I was on a regular speed of 6.8Mb for 14 months . I am now fed up being told by support centre in India they see I am receiving a speed of 7MB - haha it is completely laughable and soul destroying having such bad quality service. They just don't listen and read a script to you. You will end up (like me) repeating the whole story each time you call them back. I phoned for my MAC code and a guy in Durham put me through to customer line faults in India - my blood is still simmering. I am moving soon as.

I am also having broadband speed problems with BT and suffer the same issues, I am currently looking for a replacement supplier.

But as the local exchange has nothing but BT supplied options no local LLU currently installed any provider change will only mean the software change to bill by a different provider so wil I get anything better?

It is not just down to the exchange that could be the cause of your slow speeds.

Once you get past the exchange and the backhaul network you can find that the issues really lie on the providers actual network.

For example I live in a BT Wholesale only exchange yet I get the maximum speed possible from my provider given my distance from the exchange, whereas some of my neighbours use other providers and yet get much poorer speeds even though they are all through the same BT Wholesale equipment.

I hope this helps
