Default Can't find master socket

hi

i've got problems with finding my BT master socket.

There are three phone sockets that i know of in my property but none of them seem to be the master.

the noise margin on the router is low and when on the phone you can hear crackling etc.

because of the low noise margin sky have to cap my line at 5000kbps to ensure the connection stays stable.

I should be able to get 7meg but because of this problem i can only get 5 meg.

Default Re: Can't find master socket

In new build properties since December 2008, BT have stopped installing standard Master Sockets and are instead using new External Network Terminating Equipment boxes aka a XNTE. This is outside the property and is designed to allow engineers to easily test the master socket without bothering the householder. It uses a non-standard plug that is not intended to be accessed by consumers.

If yours is an older property, you may not have the standard split front panel BT Master Socket, the front panel may be indistinguishable from secondary sockets. If this is the case, you should be able to identify which is the master socket by unscrewing the front panel and looking for the presence of a large yellow ring capacitor.

The following site includes images of various types of BT sockets, including behind the front panel, and also ends with details of the External NTE boxes used on recent new build properties:

I hope that helps.
