Default Initial connection speed problem

I just got my line connected with broadband for the first time since moving in. I live in a town with ASDL2+ and the ISP I chose (supposedly) supported speeds around 5 MB for my postcode (my lines full potential).

However in my first few days, I'm speed testing way below that at just a scratch over 2 MB (sometimes 1.98). My old place had the same provider and consistently tested at the top speed the line could handle, I'm a little concerned.

I read on the ISPs website that in the initial 10 or so days of your first connection, your line is trying to adapt to the broadband signals or whatever, which results in slow initial speeds; I'm certainly hoping this is the case.

How common or likely is it that this is indeed just an initial blip that will pass after the early stages? Is there any reason why an ISP network that can do 5 MB in my area would under-achieve like this?

Is there anything I can do besides waiting around? should I bother thinking about upgrading the basic router of buying a faster ethernet cable or something?

Connection speed, line attenuation, noise margin and distance from exchange would help.

Connection Speed averages 1,950 MB download, 500 kb upload.

Distance from exchange is 2.1km.

Line attenuation is 54.5 downstream, 34 upstream.

I don't know where I could find out the noise margin.

For a start your line attenuation is high. Try downloading router stats lite. This will show you your download and upload speeds, line attenuation and SNR.
You could also search for and download the DMT Tool, Which will let you adjust your SNR.
I am about 2.5k from my exchange, my attenuation is 46.5db and SNR is 4.4db.
Hope this is of help, please let me know how you get on.

It would also help if you named your ISP.

Right, I've given router stats lite a look (I'm using a router it's not listed with, but it isn't saying it's having trouble connecting to the router); at first glance my plots aren't deviating at all from a horizontal line across 0. It's showing me plots for noise margin and connection speed, but I've no idea how to see line attenuation or SNR, as you'd said.

Keep in mind I'm actually posting responses several days before they are making it onto this thread. It's not that I'm being slow.

My supplier is TalkTalk incidentally.

Your best bet is to go to the talktalk forum as the OCE`S and members on there are the most helpful bunch. I am sure they can give you more help than me. I hope you get things sorted out and please let me know how you get on, sorry i can not be more helpful.
