I figured there's a last thing I should mention:

I'm not using the ADSL lead I was supplied with.

My phone socket is downstairs and I live in the upper floor of a two-storey semi-detattched house; I needed an extension to go from the socket up the stairs to my rooms. I went shopping for extension, but because I wanted to minimise interference, I figured I should get a long ADSL lead instead, as this makes the connection more direct than adding another cable into the process.

I made sure I didn't get one long enough to coil or anything, and I got one that was said to be a 'super-high-speed ADSL cable' on the package to maximse any signal strength I got.

The long ADSL cable does not fit into the back of my router cleanly like the one I was supplied with, for some reason. It clicks into place, but is held there loosely rather than firmly, jutting out and edging to the right just a little.

As you say the ADSL Cable does not fit firmly that could be part of the problem. Also you never said what Router you are using. As i said before try the talktalk forum.

I have an EchoLife HG521.

Unfortunately I'm having trouble with the TalkTalk forum. Can't register because it keeps rejecting my phone number and account number combination, saying they aren't valid; despite the fact I already have an account registered on their main website under the same details.

This kind of problem really doesn't suprise me with TalkTalk though. Generally, since signing up I've simply had 30 different variations of the same problem at different stages since I ordered from them.

Ok nice to hear again. Afaid i have no experience with your router. Only thing is that if using router stats lite, you are getting a strait line across zero then it is not working for some reason. I would guess that your router is not compatible.
