Default Re: BT Infinity roll-out ... which areas ?

Does anyone know if general spreeds will improve with the fttc roll out?
We are with aol and should be getting 8MB, but only get 1 or 2 at best.
I'm hoping that we might get the speed we should get with this fttc but nobody I speak to seems to know.
Thanks

What about getting the Fibre connected to the cabinet, is that a separate issue? Does it mean they'll say Yes Brentwood has FTTC when in fact only the exchange has been enabled? So it'll be just like the initial roll out of BB and we still won't get a decent speed for years yet until they install the actual fibre?

My speed max 576kbs but today 384Kbs - my dream is to download an iPlayer program and watch it same day!
Brentwood = Essex = mainly **** downloads! Get to the back of the queue!!!

i live within the Bourne End exchange and have noticed BT installing FTTC cabinets around my area. basically a path of cabinets leading back to the exchange....

a few months back i also noticed the adverts on the TV telling me how fantastic Infinity was nad anywhere Wifi was proving to be a great selling point.

i then checked the Infinity website which confirmed 32Mb download speed....so i registered interest. then last week i checked again and the speed had changed to 37Mb. this made ready to cancel my contract with Sky as i currently get top speeds of 1.5Mb, purchase a NAS Duo and a tablet! all ready for the switch in a few weeks time.

yesterday i check the infinity site for updates.....and now they say no Fiber or 37Mb to my phone or address.

why????????????????????????????????

any help? anybody know anymore about the roll out for the area? is the BT Infinity site correct?

thanks

Not every cabinet served by the activated exchange is upgraded to support BT Infinity. It may well be the case that your street's cabinet hasn't been upgraded or that you're too far from the cabinet to achieve BT Infinity's minimum supported sync speed of 15Mbps.

We could speculate that the change from an estimated speed to no availability could imply that BT Openreach originally planned to install a FttC cabinet nearer to your street but ultimately decided not to. That would be nothing more than a guess though.

Your best bet is probably to contact BT Infinity sales and ask them what changed.

BT Wholesale has announced plans to support FttC at slower than the current minimum 15Mbps speed if this would be faster than the line's ADSL2+ speed, but as yet this hasn't materialised.

I hope this helps.

regarding the bourne end exchange, the last updated fibre activation was set to 31/03/2011 before this it was set to december 10 and sept 10.

at least they are rolling out the cabinets in the area now.

so hopefully it should be on schedule, id carry on checking as last time they changed the activation date it showed as no longer avaliable and then they put it back 3 months.

iv resorted to being on o2 broadband monthly contract so that when they finally activate it, i can just change over without it costing an arm and a leg to get out of contract.

hopefully this helps a little.

According to the BT website our exchange went online with the FTTC/Infinity today.
I am with aol but was hoping that I might get the advertised 8 meg speed (or something closer than the 1.5 - 2 meg I was getting).
Alas no - still on just less than 2 megs this evening.
Our nearest cabinet is just over 400m away so unless the BT website is lying and the FTTC isn't up and running it looks like you have to join BT infinity to get any benefit. The BT website says I could get 24 megs with infinity now.
Surely this is against competition law to only have access to the super fast fibre optic network if you are with BT??
Still stuck in the slow lane.

BT Wholesale are offering FttC (Fibre to the Cabinet) as a wholesale product to ISPs just like standard broadband is sold. Currently uptake by other ISPs is slow.

Zen and Eclipse sell FttC products right now:

Fibre Broadband Overview | Fibre Broadband | Home & Home Office | Zen Internet
Fibre Broadband | Eclipse Internet - Eclipse Internet

While TalkTalk are trialling FttC products and should be launching these for consumers some time this year:

TalkTalk Fibre Optic Broadband

Sky also launched a limited FttC trail last year but have announced no plans to turn this into a commercial product any time soon:

Home | Sky Broadband Fibre-Optic Trial

I hope this helps.
