I recently signed up with AOL and received a Thomson Speedtouch 585 wireless router. I have a laptop with an internal Fujitsu Siemens WLAN 802.11b/g (SiS1630) wireless adapter.
Sadly, try as I may (through repeated instalations) I cannot get a wireless connection (although it works fine as a pure modem). I have tried to call AOL's telephone helplines and the firs advisor told me to wait 24 hours and try again because I hadn't yet been connected to the network. This was untrue, as I was using the wired network. The second advisor told me that my internal adapter is not compatible with their router. It strikes me that it is the Speedtouch router which is incompatible with my laptop: I have a separate wireless system in my house for my work, and my laptop can use that signal without problem. I am tempted to just buy a modem/router which ACTUALLY WORKS but would like to make sure that there isn't something simple I can do to allow my laptop to communicate with the router supplied by AOL. Any ideas appreciated! |

Hi Pebble
Interesting one that as both the router and your laptop claim to support the same standards. I'll have a word with a few people and see if I can come back with anything for you. Thanks |

Hello
What I'd suggest is you look at the following: First thing I'd look at the is WEP/WPA settings to make sure the wifi encryption is set up correctly and that the wireless is actually turned on on the router, Next, I'd look at the windows firewall, or zonealarm etc... perhaps it's not trusting the new network and IP addresses being handed out by the router.. Then I'd try and find someone with a different laptop to try and connect to the router, Lastly... there is, of course the possibility that it's faulty. |

Thanks for your responses. I think I mayhave managed to sound rather more informed than I actually am in my original post. I did get the IT Guy from work round and he declared the router 'cr*p' and I've decided to buy a one the same as I use for my work network. Money versus End of Stress. Who needs money? Thanks again.
