UK Government may intervene in broadband
Stephen Timms the Minister for Competitiveness is to set up a group to examine the role government should take in the provision of the next generation of broadband in the UK.
The UK is behind other countries in investing in ways of delivering greater bandwidth.
Addressing the Broadband Stakeholder Group "Today we face a new challenge. Other countries are starting to invest in new, fibre-based infrastructure, delivering considerably higher bandwidth than is available in the UK today," said Mr Timms.
Experts believe that to maintain our position in the top 25% of nations for broadband provision there would need to be 40% of the population with 100Mbps connections, a great deal higher than the theoretical maximum of 24Mbps in ideal conditions using ADSL.
To upgrade the entire UK to a fibre based network which would allow greater broadband speeds would cost in the region of £10-15 billion it is estimated.
