I think you get good and bad in all providers. I didn't have a landline in by old flat at all simply because BT couldn't get it working, even though there were phone lines working in the property previously. After 3 months they just gave up.
My priority is broadband right now and I can't wait to sign up for Cable - its the closest way of getting the speed that you are paying for. No other provider comes as close to their advertised speed as much as cable dows and this had been proven time and again.
I think Virgin (Telewest and NTL) have come from a history of poor reputation, deserved or not, and it's taking a long time to turn things around but I'm sure they're getting there.
It reminds me a bit of the mobile network Three. They suffer from having a terrible reputation for ugly handsets and dumb customer service but are now turning things around.
